Donner Lake Inn Donner Lake Inn We're Nina and Jim, and we run Donner Lake Inn with our three kids — from the main house, right on the property. When you text about an early check-in or a restaurant, it's one of us answering, usually from about a hundred feet away.
When we're not running the inn, Jim builds houses and Nina works in musical theatre and corporate training. Weekends are hiking, paddleboards, and cross-country skis — our kids grew up with the Sierra as their playground, and most of what we'll recommend to you, we did last weekend.
Check-in is self-serve — a keypad code, no desk to find, arrive when you arrive. Breakfast shows up every morning at 7:30. Beyond that, we stay out of your way on purpose.
But five rooms means we can actually do the personal stuff: an early check-in for a napping toddler, a dinner reservation in Truckee, a bottle of wine or flowers waiting in the room for an anniversary, or a shovel and a hand during a storm. Ask — the answer is usually yes.

The inn sits across the street from Donner Lake at the west end — the old “Crossroads” corner, on the historic Lincoln Highway. West End Beach is a ten-minute walk; downtown Truckee is ten minutes by car; four ski areas are about fifteen. Gregory Creek runs through the property, past the hot tub.
Each of the five rooms opens directly to the outdoors — private entrance, gas fireplace stove, en-suite bath, parking a few steps away. Small on purpose: it's the size that lets us know every guest by name.
We volunteer with the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe and at our kids' school, and we'll happily point you at the local spots we actually go — where to eat, which trail fits your crew, when the beach is quiet. Insider tips are included with the room.
